It was here that Jerry and Debi Hilsabeck found their family settling after years of living in Southern California. Life seemed to be moving too quickly for the family, and life events were signaling a time for change. Working several jobs, and missing time with their six kids, the Hilsabeck’s were living life in the fast-lane.
In 1993, with sights set on Colorado, the Hilsabeck family loaded up their fifteen passenger van and began the journey of traveling North to South while weaving a trail from the East to the West bound for Colorado Springs. The decidedly fast flow of Colorado’s second most populous city sent them further on their quest to Durango, Colorado.
The region provided much needed respite for their family. A new beginning offered Jerry an opportunity to continue home-building, and family time that was filled with new adventures. Weekend trips were a blessing and within a year, the Hilsabeck’s found that small mountain town at the base of Pagosa Peak and the doors to adventure opened even wider. Within two weeks their new home was Pagosa Springs, Colorado!
A Place to serve
In 1989, Jerry and Debi founded United People Help Ministry which is a non-profit organization. In 1997, following their move to Pagosa Springs, they established a thrift store of the same name in the town. For seven years, the United People Help Ministry Thrift & Gift served the community at its 4,000 square foot location in the River Center. The thrift store helped fulfill the mission to serve, though it was a massive effort to run. Debi needed just a moment to step back once again.
After a five year sabbatical, Debi went back into the community in search of an opportunity to serve in a different capacity. Learning the coffee business, and interacting with customers while working, her love of serving people was magnified. Jerry caught sight of a coffee shop that was in need of restoration and together the Hilsabeck family set out on another adventure.
With a flash of inspiration, and the never ending desire to serve, the Hilsabeck’s became the new owners of Boulder Coffee Cafe on 10.10.10.
Boulder Coffee Cafe remained at its original location in the Aspen Village until 2017. When on October 30, they closed the doors to move into the heart of Pagosa Springs and its historic downtown. After many hours of hard work and renovation, the doors re-opened on December 1st at the new location ~ 643 San Juan Street in Pagosa Springs.
The foundations of good coffee, custom meals, homemade treats, and a committed team that loves to meet, greet, and serve is what makes Boulder Coffee Cafe truly ~ a home away from home!
